Why effective communication is important for me?

Hi ~! my name is Yujin from KOREA^^
I know that effective communication is important. But why???
I can explain the topic very well, because i am korean!!! Unfortunately(?) our mother tongue is not English and we also use just one language (Korean). At these reason, I have some burden to communicate with others.(Especially this semester!!! As you know that i'm exchange student right now) I'm not good at English and can not speak Chinese and Japanese. In these situation, when I meet some foreigner, I have to more concentrate  and tense.

But whenever I got some experience, effective communication skill is very helpful to me(particularly non-verbal language) For example, At first, when I could not understand my roommate's idea (actually he is from Sweden) I usually ignore his idea or just do it my own work. So our relationship is little bit awkward. But after I decide to use my hand language and facial expression like this,(Of course he did, too.) we are more intimate and  we can make a good friendship from now on.

Actually this example is very tiny and ordinarily case, but I can realize that effective communication is important for future career and it is also improves my life. If I do not communicate more effectively, I will remain just alone within my dormitory, my school, my society. So if we meet some difficult communicate situation (any situations do not matter), we have to convey our opinion more effectively!!!

[ps. I just define that effective communication is using some other tools(like non-verbal language) and I can communicate more precisely]

  1. Hi Yujin!

I understand how difficult it must be to be in a foreign land, with few people who understand you, and using a language which you are less confident in. It is like you want to say something, and in your mind, you can formulate exactly what want to say in Korean, but you cannot translate it into English properly. Then, whatever you want to say goes unsaid. I have a similar problem too when I have to speak in Malay.
I agree with you that this language barrier will limit our social life and capabilities in expressing ourselves. However, even though using gestures and facial expressions are a good stepping stone in breaking that barrier, I feel that it is only a short-term solution. It would be good to make a conscience effort to converse in English with your roommate. It is a great opportunity because he might not mind in helping you to improve your English and at the same time, your relationship with him will be improve greatly. A win-win situation. Besides, in the long run, it would be an asset to be able to speak English well, especially since it is a universal language. We could make a pact, you and i, to continuously try to improve our second language. Haha.

  2. Hey Yujin !

I put myself in your place because I had the same experience with a Danish man. The guy was speaking so fast, and with such a pronounced accent, that I couldn't get a word ! In this situation, you are first struggling to understand the person, but when you see that it's useless then you give up.
Sometimes that's not necessarily your fault. You just can't communicate because the guy in front of you is just incomprehensible (I don't know if you were in the same situation).
For your level, you shouldn't worry because I'm sure we'll highly improve our communication skills during this semester. Also we'll do job interviews, which is the best way to enhance your skill in a professional background ! So let's learn a lot of this semester !

    See you tomorrow.

  4. Thanks, Yujin, for sharing your ideas with us. In fact, as Tasha and Guillaume both suggest, when we put ourselves in your place, we can sympathize with you. Studying in an English medium university, and in a communication course like this one, must be a huge challenge for you.

I certainly appreciate the difficulty and respect your ability to articulate your ideas as well as you have.

There are a few language issues to consider:

    1) I can explain the topic very well, because i am korean!!! >>>
You can explain **because** you are Korean? I'm not sure about that, Yujin. Maybe you could explain it better in Korean since Korean is your mother tongue. :)

    2) I have to more concentrate and tense. >>> I have to concentrate more and I become tense.

    1. Thanks Brad!!!!
I'd like to receive more intensive feedback

The first sentence means that I am Korean so I can't speak English very well.
In this situation, I can not communicate with other foreigner more precisely.
So I know that effective communication skill is very important to me!!!

and second one is my mistake... (thank you Brad)

Anyway I'd like to improve my communication skill through this course!
So whenever I make some mistakes, please give me feedback brad!!

    2. Step by step, Yujin. Rome was not built in a day. Your language skills will evolve the longer you stay in this environment and use English.

Foreigners? Do you mean non-Koreans? You (and I) are the foreigners here!

I'm glad you're getting feedback from classmates, too!

(By the way, why not immerse yourself completely and change your blog to English?)

  6. Thank you for your first good post Yu Jin ! I realize that a lot of exchange students have the same problem : English. But as said by Brad, I am sure that we will progress during the semester.

Moreover, I like your example because it proves the importance of non-oral communication.

I have an advice for you, maybe you can try to change the language of your blog (I think it's Korean right now, isn't it ?). It is not for us, your classmates, because we are just focused on your blog posts but for you because I think that more you see English, more you will learn ! I have done the same thing with my cellphone and it is really useful !

    See you soon.
